Looking back, looking ahead, at the end of the year, at the beginning of a new one; a great time to do this, especially as we end our 40th year as God’s people here on Carmel Road. We celebrate the amazing things done this year, holy experiments, sacred traditions, long-tried events and exciting innovations.
We invited in the community for our 3rd annual Countdown to Summer, to our inaugural Breakfast with Santa, to our 11th year of Room in the Inn, our 35th Living Saviour Preschool Christmas program presentation. We hosted a variety of community groups who use our fine facility— Shepherd Center bridge players, Epiphony Acapella group, AA literature group, Cub and Boy scouts. We serve our community by collecting and distributing many things throughout the year—food pantry items, Smithfield collections, and a wide variety of other agencies benefit from our generous sharing. If it wasn’t for our work, the community would miss out.
We fellowshipped together, learned together, shared so much life over coffee and cookies; with a fantastic 40th anniversary worship with our ELCA N.C. Bishop preaching, and a wonderful luncheon. We participated in a SHIFT weekend to learn more about how the world is changing and what the future of “church” might look like. We shared book studies, bible studies, prayers, and support through lay-care ministry and individually. We worshipped together in a variety of styles and times, always offering our best to God. We enjoyed our fine Christmas concert, even as the weather was less than cooperative! We came together to offer generous financial support so all these ministries could flourish and prosper without fear of “how will we pay for it?”
Rejoice! It has been a glorious year! We give thanks for the leaders of the prior 40 years, who planned out ways to live into God’s mission and ministry and gave us much to rejoice over. It has been a soul-filling, life-giving year as we lived into our mission and vision as God’s people.
As we look ahead, and imagine, what will our 50th anniversary headlines say? What amazing things will happen in the next 10 years that we will highlight and celebrate? What can we say, “If we didn’t do it, no one else would?” The choices our leaders make now will guide and direct us into the years to come.
We continue to be a place of gracious hospitality and welcome, yet we recognize that not everyone who is a guest here needs a church like us; not everyone who is without a worshipping community needs what we offer. Yet there is someone out there who needs us, needs what we offer to each other and the community; needs how we worship and serve God. Our community needs a congregation like us, to connect with us, to open doors to do God’s work of loving, serving, worshipping, and living in the Jesus way; so what will we do in 2019 that will engage, energize, and invite us to be part of God’s mission?
We will offer small group gatherings in January and February to deepen our prayers for the church and its mission, help us to get to know the other disciples at Living Saviour, and give voice to God’s dreams and plans for our next 10 years. We will offer a few more book studies in the winter including “Love Wins” by Rob Bell and “Faith Five” by Rich Melheim. We will continue to build fellowship through these studies, plus opportunities such as our Dec. 30 Potluck following our single worship service; our monthly Prime timer and dinner gatherings; coffee between services; and a February Jazz concert.
We have been God’s congregation planted in the soil of southern Mecklenburg county 40 years, growing in faith and mission, and we will continue to live into God’s calling to grow God’s kingdom of love as we live in the Jesus way of life-giving, soul-filling mission and ministry. Come and be part of it all! God needs you. We need you. We are the body of Christ on this earth.
In Christ’s love,
